OUR STORY
A Journey of Hope, Opportunity, and Transformation
Starays Hope Community Centre (SHCC) is a community-based, non-profit organization committed to empowering vulnerable children, young mothers, widows, and disadvantaged families through education, mentorship, community development, and sustainable livelihoods.
Founded in 2004 by Jane Odhiambo, Starays was born from a deep desire to address the challenges facing marginalized communities in Kenya. What began as a response to the educational and social needs of vulnerable children has grown into a transformative movement that impacts lives across Kibera in Nairobi and Rachuonyo in Homa Bay County.
For more than two decades, Starays has stood as a beacon of hope for individuals and families seeking a pathway out of poverty and into a future filled with opportunity, dignity, and self-reliance.
WHY WE STARTED
Responding to Real Community Challenges
Starays Hope Community Centre was founded after recognizing the numerous barriers preventing children and families from reaching their full potential.
Many children were unable to access education because of poverty. Young mothers were abandoning their education after early pregnancies. Orphans lacked support systems.
Widows struggled to provide for their families. Communities lacked access to sustainable opportunities that could improve their quality of life.
Rather than viewing these challenges as permanent realities, Starays chose to become part of the solution by creating programs that restore hope, empower individuals, and transform communities.

2004
Starays Hope Community Centre was founded to provide educational opportunities for vulnerable children.
Growth of Educational Programs
Expansion of educational support initiatives serving children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Launch of the Second Chance Program
Creation of pathways that allow young mothers, school dropouts, and vulnerable youth to return to education.
Establishment of Schools
Development of learning institutions in Kibera and Rachuonyo to provide quality and affordable education.
